This is meant to be more of a discussion starter than a declarative post about Onahole history.
I was idly thinking about what it must be like to work for one of these onahole companies. Where it would be your job to sculpt fake asses or titties or even more importantly design new internal stimulating tunnels for onaholes. I'm sure by now they have a good idea of the types of textures and placements of said textures that work well but I have to imagine in the beginning it was more trial and error. Different materials/softness, different ribs vs nubs, etc. Not to mention they must have some kind of test/control group to give feedback so they know something is worth producing and putting to market. Man imagine having that job! Having to "test/try out" all the new onahole designs. Damn.
Anyways. this got me curious where onaholes really started. Male sex toys seems to be more recent but also a little murkier on their origins. Technically, Dildos have been around for thousands of years at least since Ancient Greece/Egypt if not further back but the modern Dildo as we know it seems to have started to come into play around the 1940s and has gradually been updated with different/improved processes/materials to today.
The Male sex toy, the onahole seems harder to pinpoint an origin. Maybe because there's more stigma there, it was more underground, not the kind of thing one openly reported on or talked about... Not sure. I read that there's indications of fruits, bone or gourds or even pipes with fabric inside like velvet used as onaholes back in the 1600s. There was also the "Dutch Wives" (Sacks filled with a soft material crudely made to look like a woman with an appropriate hole where needed) for sailing vessels of the 1800s.
It feels like the Onahole as we know them didn't come into play until around the mid-late 90s. I can only go on the founding of Real Doll (and hence their internal artificial vaginas) in 1996 and the founding of the Fleshlight in 1998 as starting points here.
But I HAVE to think the Japanese were already ahead of the game even then. They are SO much better at coming up with truly pleasurable sex toys for men over the American toys it's not even funny and to me that comes from. more experience (or a hell of meticulous dedication to their craft). I read TENGA was founded in 2000. Seems that a lot of the Onaholes we all love today came out mostly in the last decade.. or two. I'm sure advances in technology and more importantly safe/soft materials has been the game changer here. But I have to guess there were cruder rubber pussies available in Japan prior to the 21st century, though I can't find much on this and often when I do I can't read the language! lol.
So if there's any long term Onahole collectors or maybe the staff at ToyDemon who have been dealing with suppliers and brands like Toysheart, Magic Eyes, NPG etc over the last 12 might have some light to shed on the history of the product itself. When any of the big Japanese companies started or started offering onaholes. Any known breakthroughs on material, style, brand etc. I'd love to hear.

@Greenwood95 this is an awesome topic and I’m equally curious. My first experience with sex toys was the fleshlight back in 2006.

@eelsushi I feel like the real answers would have to come from Japan- either one of the companies or a severe enthusiast willing to post/talk and of course get translated. I'd be very curious how we arrived at the modern onahole. I myself got my first Fleshlight in early '13. I didn't like it but it was my gateway to onaholes a month or two later. I was aware of Fleshlights maybe 1-2 years earlier from advertisements online. I was aware of the Real Doll probably going back to around 2006 from ads either in Playboy or online. Other than that all I knew about were those horrible crude old style female blow up dolls you usually saw as gags in 80s college/party movies.
