There are a lot of cultural phenomenon in Japan that are rarely seen outside Japan. The glorification of these niche events in the west can sometimes paint a strange picture of Japan to westerners. This is especially true when it is imported into a completely different culture like USA. Maid Cafe is one Japanese niche recently hitting the USA with the latest Chou Anime Cafe in Midtown Detroit. We kinda did a double take when we saw it mentioned on twitter and curiosity got us to click on the link.
We'll invite you to check the site and the video out for yourself. The staff of Chou Anime Cafe have all adopted Japanese or Japanese-ish names. They are dressed as maids and butlers serving signature Japanese snacks and drinks such as Pocky Sticks and Ramune Sodas. These servers also doubles as live entertainment with some song and dance. This maid cafe offers a location for local fans of Japanese games, cosplay, and music to all hang out together in one location.
We are all for Pockys and Green tea Kitkats here at ToyDemon. The owner of Chou Anime Cafe (Oneka Samet) is a trailblazer bringing Japan's sub-culture to Detroit, but is America ready for it? Who knows, maybe one will open up by you in the near future.
